Hanging by a Thread is a personal exploration of the idea of place and the connections to place that are often intangible, unexplainable, and impermanent, but nevertheless often more real than the physical reality which threatens to sever them.  Since I was a teenager, Costa Rica has been that place for me.  It has been the backdrop to my personal narrative as I transitioned from child to adult, and continues to affect my evolution through adulthood.  For years I have analyzed and rationalized my connection to this place, and ultimately this body of work is a result of that investigation.  In the summer of 2017, I returned to Costa Rica as an Artist in Residence in order to further engage with this concept.  What emerged in the work through my Residency is the realization that there is beauty in the struggle of being separated from places of connection, and heartbreak in the indulgence of returning to them.  Furthermore, there is a universal point of understanding within this that transcends my own personal story.

Through a series of figurative oil paintings, I explore the various facets of this dichotomy, not only as one who has experienced them, but one who understands that this experience is felt by all people on some level.  While the images are inspired by personal experience, the figures are not portraits, but rather characters representing the personification of each facet.  There is a classical approach to rendering the figures, but there is symbolism in the poses, the textures, and the subtle environments in which each is placed.  A “thread” is evident in each painting and plays a role in conveying the narrative.  The way that the figure interacts with the thread, and the level of subtlety or boldness of the thread, also plays homage to the story.  In essence, the images are a snapshot of the experiential connection to place, as an outsider, as a dreamer, and as a participant. 

Colgando de un Hilo es una exploración personal del concepto de lugar y las conexiones que surgen con él, que frecuentemente son intangibles, inexplicables e impermanentes, y que son –a pesar de ello- más reales que la misma realidad física que a amenaza desconectarnos de esos lugares.

Desde mi adolescencia Costa Rica se ha convertido en este espacio de conexión. Este país centroamericano ha sido el trasfondo clave de mi narrativa personal a medida que transicionaba hacia la adultez. Por tal razón, he analizado por años mi conexión a este lugar y como resultado de dicha exploración surge esta investigación final.

En el verano del 2017 regresé a Costa Rica como Artista Residente para abordar a fondo este concepto de lugar. Durante mi residencia he descubierto la belleza que existe dentro de la distancia que me separa de estos  lugares de conexión y  la nostalgia por volver a ellos. Entendí, además, que existe un punto de experiencia universal que trasciende mi historia particular. Exploro las varias facetas de esta dicotomía, no solo como alguien que las ha vivido, sino además como alguien quien entiende que esta experiencia puede ser sentida por todos.

Esta serie de imágenes están inspiradas en experiencias personales representadas en personajes/figuras que simbolizan el rol de cada faceta en mi experiencia espacial y emotiva en Costa Rica. El acercamiento clásico que realizo en este proyecto refuerza el simbolismo de las poses, las texturas y los ambientes sutiles donde se desenvuelven estos personajes/figuras. Por otra parte, vinculo el elemento del hilo para conectar las diversas narrativas entre figura y figura.

La manera en que las figuras interactúan con el hilo, así como el nivel de sutilidad y la intensidad del hilo,  rinden homenaje a la historia de los espacios en el que surgen. En esencia, las imágenes son estampas de las conexiones que experimenté en estos espacios desde el punto de vista del extranjero, el de soñador y el de participante.
